Yeah, yeah I’ve only listened to it a coupla times now and don’t intend to rush to conclusions like I did on ‘Mumbai Express’ (I can’t seem to get enough of the saranam of Yele Nee Etti Po and the cool interludes of Poo Poothathu these days). So, the following are first impressions that might undergo radical changes upon the 18th listening and have me acknowledge this as his best effort ever. Or not.
– Nay for Unnaale
– a half-hearted Aye for Andha Naal (that’s the Shreya bias talking)
– Nay for Ennada Nenache
– a conditional Aye for Kaatu Vazhi, meaning you might like it if you love Raja’s voice like I do (interesting handshake between Irish & Tamizh folk)
and
– the easiest Aye on the album for Kili Thattu . I long for more such vintage Raja tunes.
One thing is for sure. I can’t see anyone but Ilaiyaraja fans and their infinite patience making it to the end of this album. “Beat junkies” should skip this one and wait for the next Yuvan or Harris Jeyaraj offering.
PS: I have to recommend a song from Parineeta called Piya Bole sung by Shreya Goshal. She is an amazing singer.
Manoj, I liked Kaattu vazhi and its interlude instantly despite not being a huge fan of IR’s voice. If he chooses songs like this with a rustic touch rather than singing songs like “Malare pesu mouna mozhi”(Geethanjali) he often scores. The song ended with me wishing for atleast one different charanam/interlude. I m glad that I was patient enough to listen to this song fully and not brush it off aside as another usual philosophical Raaja number.

He did kind of butcher ‘Malare Paesu’, I agree! But then Chitra’s voice also sounded suspect in that song, so I’d like to blame it on bad sound production. ;) Or maybe he just needs to stick to songs sung in a lower pitch. Metti Oli Kaathodu or Sangathil Paadadha Kavidhai, for example, came out before Geetanjali and he still manages to sound nice there.
As for Kaatu Vazhi, you’re right about how someone could just go onto the next song before the accompaniments kicked in. It sounds so much better with the nice chord placements after the first minute of a droning Mottai. :)
