What I won’t give for another Rahman or Raja to save the Tamil industry from what is obviously a freefall into mediocrity. Clueless morons like Devi Sri Prasad, who would’ve once just seemed adequate for a latter-day, unfunny Pandiyarajan movie, has now composed for two mainstream movies in the past few months. While I’m not going to review either Maayavi or Sachin, which I consider an incredible waste of time, I did feel the need to vent my frustration at having had to listen to songs devoid of any hint of musical ability. Songs born from an unholy alliance of hackneyed tunes, hastily mish-mashed rhythms, non-existent orchestration and sometimes horrid singers. Songs that would give the talentless MDs up in Bollywood an instant superiority complex.
If history has taught Tamil Film Music followers anything, it’s that the Music gods have never let us down for a good 40 years. So, here’s hoping that this is just a temporary phase and that the next MSV, Raja or Rahman is already honing his talents to soon deliver us from this onslaught of half-baked musicians.
I hear you and I share your grief. Its a pity that Rahman has decided to concentrate more on Hindi albums of late. I couldnt even listen fully to the songs from the 2 albums that you mentioned. Although I wasnt enamoured with Mumbai Express either, it sounds much classier when compared to the other albums released recently. Atleast the interludes show some class even if the tunes are ordinary.

Although I have my own views on Sachien and Maayavi, I still feel that Tamil music fans deserve to be treated better. Such newcomers / youngsters are getting chances only because the seniors are too busy / pricey.

Vijay, you’re right about Mumbai Express. The tunes themselves sound like something Ilaiyaraja randomly came up with it, but the actual music itself was decent. But then, Ilaiyaraja’s rich legacy is also his curse. The inevitable comparisons arise and easily dismiss M.Xpress as yet another lacklustre effort from him.
Kaps, I think the influx of young composers is not such a bad thing. What is bad though is that we seem to be attracting only the riff-raff. Someone like Devi Sri Prasad should’ve been shown the door after “Ice”. But his staying power bears testimony to the fact that, with lack of better alternatives, the standards of the listening public is also being lowered to enjoy anything that is thrown in their face.

Manoj, what is sorely missing amongst the young music directors is individuality – a very difficult thing to achieve in my opinion. Its very easy to make music like someone else. But considering the fact that there have been only 3 major trends in Tamil film music in the last 45 years, expecting another major trend might require a lot of patience. I see a lot of young music directors trying hard to come up with some mish-mash of genres not previously explored by Rahman eventually resulting in alaclustre product. Nothing new in terms of presentation. Sometimes listening to present day music I feel whether we have probably come afull circle in Tamil film music and perhaps Rahman, Ilayaraja and others before him had an advantage in that they appeared earlier in time when lesser music was explored by composers before them. I sometimes feel that there arent enough aspects of a song to explore by the future composers(MSV concentrated on melody, Raja on orchestration, Rahman on new sounds/genres/world pop. What’s left?). I hope to be proved wrong by the next whiz kid honing his skills somewhere.

G V Prakash(the child voice in the song Chikku Bukku Rayilu), a relative of ARR has signed up his first project. One more addition to the list of new music directors.

Vijay…yeah, we can only hope!
Kaps…as long as he is not another AR Rahana.
